West Virginia has the highest personal income tax rate of its neighboring states. Members of the state Senate should be open to a plan from Gov. Jim Justice that calls for a 50% cut in the tax rate over the next three years.
The legislation, House Bill 2526, passed the House early this session by a 95-2 vote. It now sits in the Senate where some members have expressed concern with the idea.
Here's our concern: we live in a region where residents can work in Wheeling and live in Ohio or Pennsylvania, where the income tax rate is 3.99% and 3.07%, respectively. West Virginia's top income tax rate is 6.5%. Paying more in taxes discourages people from moving to West Virginia. The Senate should come along and fix this problem.
