Claim Unclaimed Funds

2 min read

Most Ohioans could probably do with a little extra cash these days. With the help of the Ohio Department of Commerce, it's possible to find out whether there's some lying around forgotten.

"You can look up an unclaimed fund for anyone and we encourage you to do that," Susie Wagner, outreach administrator for the department's Division of Unclaimed Funds, said. "We have found that much of the unclaimed funds belong to people over 50 years of age and deceased individuals. So, we want people to not only search their names, search their parents, grandparents and any family members who are living or deceased."

According to the division, the average claim last year was $4,000. The division says it is still holding approximately $3 billion in unclaimed funds. For the most part, it comes from inactive bank accounts, refund/credit balances, uncashed cashier's checks, stocks and bonds, forgotten utility deposits or paychecks.

Ohioans can search their names at unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov, or call 614-466-4433 to find out more.

For now, all this money is in the hands of the Division of Unclaimed Funds "for safekeeping." Don't wait to find out whether there is some that could be getting put to a lot better use from your own pocket.
