U.S. Department of Justice officials have spent almost two years reviewing the Columbus Division of Police, after a series of headline-grabbing incidents that resulted in, among other things, officer-involved shootings such as those that led to the deaths of Andre Hill and Ma'Khia Bryant.
Importantly, the police department requested the review, and some help in putting any reforms in place, after its actions created a trust and communication problem with the community.
DOJ recommended improved training, hiring and accountability; establishment of a leadership group; and improvements in technology.
"The Columbus Division of Police is a promising institution, well positioned to make positive, self-driven reform in the coming years," the report's conclusion reads. "After two extensive site visits, an in-depth review of policies and practices, discussions with leadership, and the range of technical assistance provided, the CDP has begun the hard work of putting the division on a path to becoming a stronger agency."
Good. We must hope they do not again stray from that path.
