One of the key themes of the Easter holiday is renewal -- of ourselves, our faith and the promise that has been given to us. And for years, the North Wheeling Community Dream Center has been spreading the message of renewed hope to our region through its annual Easter Giveaway that helps area families enjoy a happy holiday.
This year's giveaway is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dream Center in North Wheeling. Those wanting to help can do so during a "Stuff the Bus" event set for 4-6 p.m. Thursday outside of Riesbeck's in Elm Grove, where the public can donate items.
Help is needed this year. Suffragan Bishop Darrell Cummings, lead pastor at Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, noted food prices are up more than 10% from 2022.
"For now, we're getting out the basics of what the families need," Cummings said. "What money could buy last Easter is definitely different this year."
Also different this year is the opportunity for patrons to pick what items they need, as opposed to how the giveaway worked during the pandemic, when bags were prepared and handed out. There also will be a selection of clothing for youngsters to help celebrate Easter.
"Hopefully they get home and have a great Easter, and celebrate a new start and a new beginning," Cummings said.
The annual effort by Cummings and his volunteers is a true reminder of our higher calling. Handing out food for a holiday meal and clothes so young ones can look their best at an Easter Sunday service are just a small piece of our mission to care for one another.
