One would think that, with Ohio's school year nearing its end, drivers would by now understand how to conduct themselves safely when it comes to school buses. But a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Marietta Post suggests otherwise.
OSHP Lt. Chris Chesar reports the post has received an unusually high volume of calls from Washington and Morgan county school bus drivers regarding drivers who are passing buses while students are being picked up or dropped off.
Drivers must stop when approaching a stopped school bus -- from either direction -- and remain at least 10 feet from the front or back of the bus.
"The Patrol is asking all motorists to be mindful when approaching school buses and exercise extreme caution while sharing the road with a school bus to ensure everyone's safety, especially the students," the patrol said.
Goodness knows we shouldn't need the lecture. But apparently it's become enough of a problem for the OSHP to speak up.
