Organ Donors Help Give Another Chance

2 min read

Often, when we talk about "giving the gift of life," we're referring to donating blood. But it's this month, which is set aside as Donate Life Month, it's important to remember that donating organs is another way we can help those in need live a productive life.

WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital on Monday held a ceremony to mark Donate Life Month, and at that event Amanda Jenkins spoke of how organ transplants have allowed her to regain her life.

Jenkins, born with cystic fibrosis, had her first transplant in 2017 when she received a new lung. The medication she needed to help her body accept the new lung damaged her kidneys, and she received a new kidney in 2020. Both of these transplants have given her a second chance with her family.

"I've watched my little girl grow into a beautiful young lady," she said. "I've watched her outgrow me by 5 inches and will soon see her graduate from the eighth grade. I celebrated 18 years of marriage to the man who slept in the uncomfortable recliners, paced the waiting room floors and his mere presence made me feel safer, even in the scariest situations.

"… It's been a roller coaster, to say the least, but I would do it all again without hesitation because of my donors. I appreciate every day, every milestone and never take a single breath for granted."

Consider becoming an organ donor, and let your family know of your wishes to give life.
