Private employers made this leap years ago, but now state government can make the leap from hiring based on academic qualifications to hiring based on what a person can do. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has signed an executive order that expands skills-based hiring practices -- hiring candidates based on specific skills, experience and training rather than just academic degrees.
"Focusing on skills and abilities rather than degrees allows employers to prioritize what really matters for job performance," Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said.
There is value in academic degrees for some jobs, but hiring managers know there is just as much value in what a person has done and how well they can be taught. Ohio leaders are smart to take this approach.
This is yet another step toward keeping Ohio on the leading edge of workforce development.
