Hard Work Pays Off For Students

2 min read

As we progress through life, one of the true joys is seeing the children of our friends, neighbors and fellow community members succeed. There has been much to celebrate in that regard over the past few days, as nine local high school and college students have been lauded for their academic accomplishments.

At West Virginia University, Wheeling native and Wheeling Park High School alum Lillian Bischof, who will graduate May 12 with dual degrees in chemical engineering and finance, was one of eight students named to the Order of Augusta, WVU's most prestigious academic award. Bischof maintained a 4.0 grade point average through her college career while conducting research on clean energy solutions. On top of that, she served in leadership roles to help empower women in business and foster STEM interest in young girls.

Along with the eight Order of Augusta members, WVU also named 44 additional Outstanding Seniors for 2023. Six of those slots were earned by Ohio Valley natives -- Brandon Neiswonger of Moundsville, Anthony Siler of Glen Dale, Devin Price of Weirton, and Caitlin Mead, Deanna Crumm and Melina McCabe of Wheeling.

Fairmont State University also honored a Wheeling Park graduate when it named Emma Delk as the Outstanding English Student for 2023.

The last honor came for Wheeling Park High School senior Mariana Alkhouri who on Monday was named a WVU Foundation Scholar, the top academic award for incoming freshman, valued at $90,000 over four years.

As these young men and women start the next chapter of their lives, we hope you join with us in wishing them the best.
