The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra's board announced two excellent decisions Thursday: the hiring of Sonja Thoms as the symphony's new executive director, and a contract extension with Music Director John Devlin.
Thoms, a Pittsburgh native, comes to Wheeling from the Nashville Symphony, where she oversaw the operations department. She has an impressive resume and will oversee a symphony that is experiencing a resurgence.
That revival coincided with Devlin's arrival. Under his direction, the Wheeling Symphony has re-engaged with the local community.
"The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra looks forward to seeing the progress the partnership between these two skilled leaders will produce," symphony board President Mary Hanley said. "We have full confidence that the guidance of John Devlin and Sonja Thoms will allow the orchestra to continue to grow, succeed, and provide outstanding musical experiences to our community."
