Following a four-year gap because of COVID and a need to reorganize, the Weirton Hall of Fame has resumed its efforts to recognize current and former residents for their contributions to the community.
This year's induction class of eight recently was announced, and will be honored during an event being planned for sometime in August.
They include public servants, educators, members of the business community, medical professionals and even Weirton's current mayor.
Honorees in the Class of 2023 are Vanessa Beaver, owner of Sweet Temptations Pastry Shop; Kathleen Granato, who owned and operated Granato's Deli for more than 30 years; the late Dr. Myer Bogarad, one of Weirton's earliest medical providers; Karen Gould, who has served on several community boards and organizations, as well as improving educational opportunities in Hancock County; Tracy Ohalek, a long-time local educator; Janice Torrance, who has operated Torrance Music Studio since 1965, training generations of residents in the musical arts; Nick Tranto, a long-time leader in the local Greek community; and Mayor Harold "Bubba" Miller.
The Weirton Hall of Fame reminds us of the importance of honoring those who step forward in an effort to help our communities thrive.
The Weirton area has seen many ups and downs in its history, but there has always been that constant of people who give of themselves to make their city better.
From those involved in the city's founding to its long list of educators, volunteers, business owners and more, they have found a way to contribute while inspiring others to do the same. We offer our congratulations to this year's class of inductees and look forward to the day you are officially recognized for your accomplishments.
