Buckeye State officials have spent some time cultivating the idea that Ohio is the "Silicon Heartland," a place that rivals the West Coast when it comes to technology and innovation. But that label doesn't fit unless Ohioans embrace their own entrepreneurial spirit and ingenuity to contribute to this growing reputation.
To that end, Ohio Third Frontier is again looking for technology startups that can develop their new ideas and bring them to market. Through the Technology Validation and Start-up Fund program, companies can apply for grants that can make a difference in commercializing their products.
Recent examples of success include Standard Bariatrics, which received a $100,000 grant in 2015 and has since grown to be acquired by Teleflex in a deal worth $300 million.
"Ohio's innovators are what makes Ohio the Silicon Heartland," said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. "These entrepreneurs have created cutting-edge technologies and life-saving products, and we want to support them in getting those projects to the next step."
So who's next? Which Ohio Valley entrepreneur is sitting on the next great technological innovation?
Awards are focused on technology and tech-enabled products in advanced manufacturing; advanced materials; biomedical and life sciences; energy; sensors; and software and information technology. Proposals are due by Aug. 4. Go to Development.Ohio.gov/TVSF to find out more.
