West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Michele Blatt made a wise decision in appointing Erik Schramm to the Ohio County Board of Education. Schramm, a former two-term board member, should be able to help the local board tackle important issues over the next 11 months, with a focus on putting students first.
"I appreciate and am grateful for the trust Superintendent Blatt has placed in me with this appointment," Schramm said. "I look forward to serving the county again in this capacity and advancing the work of the Ohio County Board of Education."
That work must include real consideration of a new start time at Wheeling Park High School. In just about a month, local high school students will again be boarding buses prior to 6 a.m. Despite efforts by board member Molly Aderholt to fix this -- the science is clear that later start times are better for high school students -- board members and the school administration have resisted change.
There are other issues on the table -- increasing student achievement, attracting highly qualified teachers. Schramm is well-suited to help the board tackle these matters.
