Be Prepared For Hunting Season

2 min read

West Virginia hunters have a little homework to do this year, as a number of updated regulations go into effect ahead of the white-tail deer, wild turkey and black bear seasons this fall.

At WVdnr.gov/hunting-regulations, hunters can find the 2023-24 West Virginia Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary. Or, they can call the local hunting and fishing license agent or West Virginia Division of Natural Resources district office.

For our region, the District 1 Wildlife Resources/Law Enforcement phone number is 304-825-6787.

Changes include season dates and open counties, requirements for bringing some deer to designated Biological Game Examination Stations, legalization of encapsulated propellant charges during certain times, and even the availability of non-resident lifetime hunting, trapping and fishing licenses.

A Special Youth, Class Q and Class XS bear season will be a split season -- with or without dogs.

It's a lot to take in, and perhaps a good time to remind hunters that anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1975 must complete a Certified Hunter Education course before purchasing a hunting license.

If that has slipped your mind, or if you are bringing a youngster along for the first time, find out more at www.register-ed.com/. Meanwhile, go to wvdnr.gov/programs-publications/hunter-education/ for a refresher on the "Ten Commandments of Gun Safety."

Hunting is just one of the many ways we can enjoy the wild, wonderful woods we love.

Don't plan to go hunting unless you can do so legally and safely. If you choose to hunt, enjoy it even more by being educated and prepared.
