It's not every day Ohioans get a glimpse into what gets done with some of those little fees we see hidden on various bills and invoices. But the state Department of Commerce's Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing spelled out the use of one when it opened the application period for the fiscal year 2024 Cemetery Grant Program.
Grants are funded by $1 of every $2.50 paid in burial permit fees received by the division. For this round, that has added up to $104,000 for cemetery upkeep.
"Cemeteries are the keepers of our state's heritage and are a vital part of our communities. These grants are designed to aide Ohio cemeteries with special projects or repairs that are above daily maintenance," said Kirk Roberts, chairman of the Ohio Cemetery Dispute Resolution Commission. "Some of these projects are never addressed due to lack of funding. I encourage all qualifying Ohio cemeteries to take advantage of this funding."
Surely caretakers of cemeteries across our region can think of projects that could use a little financial support.
Wheels must be turning already for those who can think of more than one exceptional project for which to request such funding.
But the application period ends soon. Grant applications can be submitted at cemeterygrants.com.ohio.gov/.
Those who believe they have a qualifying project must not miss the opportunity to apply.
