Amid the orange barrels, closed lanes and general disruption that has resulted from the ongoing $35 million facelift of downtown Wheeling has emerged a bright, colorful spot of hope at the top of Main Street.
The Bridge Tavern & Grill, purchased in recent years by the Carl family, has used the Downtown Streetscape Project as a chance to undertake some major renovations. Along with a new entrance and interior upgrades, the latest project -- set to be completed by the end of October -- is adding some needed color and flair to a city hoping for a rebirth.
A new mural celebrating the city's musical heritage -- The Bridge sits adjacent to the Capitol Theatre and for decades has served as a favorite stop for those attending the venue -- is underway. Moundsville artist Drew Gonchoff has been commissioned for the work.
"We're on the same corner as the Capitol Theatre, which was once home to the WWVA and the Jamboree, so it just makes sense for us to promote music specifically of that genre," owner Doug Carl said. The mural, he said, "is a great opportunity to pay homage to the rich country music past of Wheeling."
The Bridge already has leaned heavily into its connection with the city's musical heritage with a large neon guitar hanging outside the front door. The mural is a continuation of The Bridge's goal to "bring back live bluegrass and old-school country," Carl said.
Gonchoff's work already is drawing much attention. He said his inspiration is being drawn from performers "from Loretta Lynn to Brad Paisley," and passing motorists are taking notice. He said he's gotten used to answering questions from stopped motorists interested in just what he's doing.
"It's going to be one of the first things coming … into Wheeling, so it's a big opportunity for me," said Gonchoff. "I am happy to be doing it, especially since I have a personal connection to the artists I'm representing in the painting."
This is yet another example of private investment into meaningful projects downtown. Music has played such an important role in Wheeling's past, and can continue to play a role in the future. The Carl family is doing excellent work at The Bridge.
