Washington Must Meet the Moment by Reining In Reckless Spending

By U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney 4 min read

Once again, Washington is barreling toward a possible government shutdown. Congress has had nine months to fund the government, but there is a lack of willingness on both sides of the aisle to control spending.

Rather than remedy our out-of-control spending problem, many Republicans want to team up with Democrats to keep our country on an unsustainable spending path on the backs of American taxpayers, our children and future generations.

We cannot continue to function like this.

Large factions of Republican and Democrat members in the House and Senate are united in passing a Continuing Resolution without any spending cuts to keep the government open and ensure that Congress continues to spend outside of its means. This solution is not only irresponsible, but it hands leverage over to President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Not to mention, it also gives Democrat leaders the ability to continue to push their reckless border crisis, record-breaking inflation and funding woke leftist race and gender policies.

Continuing Resolutions are a staple in Washington. Each time one is passed, future generations are saddled with more debt. Unlike many members of the Washington swamp, I joined an effort to prevent the passage of a Continuing Resolution to ensure the Republican House of Representatives guards against abuses of your hard-earned taxpayer dollars. Our elected bodies in Washington have had the entire year to pass a responsible spending plan. Nevertheless, we have once again delayed until we are staring down a deadline. That's the Washington way.

Taxpayers in West Virginia and across the country deserve to have their hard-earned dollars spent the way that the Constitution intends, but unfortunately, a Continuing Resolution goes against the process outlined in the Constitution. Instead, we need to pass single-subject bills that dictate what funding is allowed and outline what it's not allowed to be used for. Congress must do its Constitutional duty and keep the Biden Administration's reckless agenda in check.

It's time to reclaim the power of the purse.

Joining members of both parties who want to continue passing massive spending bills is my opponent, Gov. Jim Justice, a true tax-and-spend liberal.

Rather than protect West Virginia taxpayers by reining in spending, he supports the Washington swamp's big-spending agenda. Justice has thrown his support behind several of President Biden's signature pieces of legislation including the $1.9 trillion 2021 COVID stimulus package, the pork-filled "infrastructure" package, and the Inflation Reduction Act. All three packages forced West Virginia taxpayers to foot the bill for more unnecessary spending pushed by President Biden and Democrats in Congress. Justice even went so far as to oppose the repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act, calling it "a bad, bad move." Despite its clever name, the bill supercharged Joe Biden's record-breaking inflation crisis, which is hurting families across West Virginia.

After promising to never raise taxes if elected, as governor, Justice proposed the largest tax increase in our state's history, raised the gas tax, proposed a 45% increase on the beer, wine, and liquor tax, and vetoed fiscally responsible budgets put forth by Republicans in the state Legislature. Justice claims to be a Republican, but his record is liberal, like a Democrat.

Unlike Jim Justice, I have always supported fiscally responsible budgets. I am the only conservative in the race for the United States Senate. Our national debt already surpassed $33 trillion this month. It's time for West Virginia to elect a U.S. senator who will rein in Washington's reckless spending -- before it's too late.
