Be Safe in School Zones

1 min read

It's hard to believe, given all the public awareness that's been done about student safety, that drivers continue to speed through active school zones. It's gotten to the point here in Ohio County that Wheeling Police officers have been requested to sit outside of Triadelphia Middle School on National Road to help regulate the flow of traffic when students are coming to and leaving school.

"For about two weeks, every other day (Wheeling police) were there and they really slowed people down. It has really helped," Ohio County Schools Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones said.

But the problem is not just centered at Triadelphia. Bethlehem Elementary, Woodsdale Elementary, Bridge Street Middle School --it's an issue countywide.

Slow down in school zones and follow the posted limit -- typically 15 mph. Not only is a speeding fine in a school zone double, but it unnecessarily puts students and others in danger.

There's no excuse for not putting others' safety first.
