Part of Fire Prevention Month is ensuring local fire departments have the needed facilities to help firefighters protect their community. What's happening in Wheeling right now with the under-construction Fire Department Headquarters in East Wheeling is unacceptable, and city leaders must ensure it gets straightened out immediately.
According to our reporting, construction of the new $9 million headquarters has been impacted after a number of subcontractors walked off the job over payment issues with Cleveland-based general contractor &build -- a PCS Company. City Manager Robert Herron and others have been working to get the issues resolved, as the current Fire Department headquarters in Center Wheeling -- located on the ground floor of the Center Wheeling Parking Garage -- soon will be meeting the wrecking ball. The new headquarters is set to be completed at the end of this year.
"The city hasn't discussed or approved a revised schedule," Herron said on Monday. "We are very sensitive to the schedule we put forward. It's all got to come together at the right time."
And there's no reason why it shouldn't. Get these issues resolved and get back to work for the taxpayers of Wheeling. There's no excuse to do otherwise.
