The statistics don't lie: Over a four-day period this month in Wheeling, city police issued 75 traffic citations in school zones -- mostly for speeding, but also for drivers using handheld devices, not having registration, driving suspended and also for possession of marijuana.
The enforcement centered on Triadelphia Middle, Bridge Street Middle and Woodsdale Elementary schools. Of the citations issues, 51 were for speeding.
"I think people are in a rush and don't really care anymore. They're more concerned with themselves than the safety of others," Wheeling Police Department Cpl. Gerald Mitchell said.
That needs to end. There's no excuse to speed through an active school zone. Slow down.
