It's hard to see it through the maze of orange barrels, missing sidewalks and pock-marked streets, but a real revival is happening -- right now -- in downtown Wheeling and its adjoining neighborhoods. Consider the events that took place just this past weekend:
n Comedian Jerry Seinfeld brought his act to a packed crowd at the Capitol Theatre;
– The Main Street Bank Fantasy in Lights Parade made its way along a revised route just south of downtown in Center Wheeling;
n Winter on the Plaza lit up the night at the Market Street Plaza, to the joy of hundreds of visitors;
– The Bridge Tavern & Grill, recently reopened after an extensive remodel, kicked up its live entertainment offerings to a packed house at the corner of 10th and Main streets;
– Downtown restaurants were filled with patrons prior to the events;
– The newly opened Waterfront Hall hosted after-party events late into the evening following Seinfeld, leading to hundreds of people remaining downtown.
We're sure more took place, but these are just some of the things currently happening in a downtown that remains heavily under construction. Those events led to thousands of people spending time and money downtown last weekend. That's a testament to a growing group of city residents working to make a difference in the central business district.
While that level of excitement will help pave the way for a brighter future, there still remains much work to be done -- and many questions remain unanswered. What's the status of the Wheeling-Pitt Lofts, for one?
Also, once the Downtown Streetscape is complete, what's the plan to help spruce up downtown's appearance? Many of the buildings could use some attention.
Those are questions that need considered moving forward, but do not take away from all the excitement and energy downtown currently is experiencing. To those making it happen, thank you for your work, and keep your foot on the pedal.
