There's a formula for student success that's quietly been taking shape at Wheeling Central Catholic High School. Over the past decade, for example, a significant number of service academy appointments have come from the East Wheeling high school. And last week, in the latest instance of Central being honored as an up-and-coming high school on the academic scene, the school was named one of seven in West Virginia to make the AP School Honor Roll.
To qualify for the honor roll, schools must meet the following criteria:
– College Culture: 40% or more of the graduating cohort took at least one AP exam during high school.
– College Credit: 25% or more of the graduating cohort scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam during high school.
– College Optimization: 2% or more of the graduating cohort took five or more AP exams during high school.
Joining Wheeling Central Catholic on the list are two other Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston schools -- Charleston Catholic High School and Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg -- along with George Washington High School, Bridgeport, W.Va. High School, Morgantown High School and Trinity Christian High School in Morgantown.
"We are so proud of this distinction not only for our Catholic schools, but also for our students, their families, and our teachers," Interim Superintendent of the state's Catholic schools Jennifer Hornyak said. "When you are a member of our Catholic schools, you are an important part of our team that works hard to remain focused on living our united mission, 'accompany families in challenging children to recognize, develop, and share their God-given gifts and talents.'"
Challenging children to be their best. That's a solid approach to helping students achieve success. Wheeling Central staff, parents and students deserve much credit for pushing students to be their best.
This honor is just one more indicator that it is appropriate to have standards for students, and to hold them to achieving those standards.
