It's hard to discuss the future of downtown Wheeling without at least considering the future of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. The bridge and our downtown are linked and at some point soon, the West Virginia Division of Highways must decide if the bridge will reopen to traffic or will remain a pedestrian-only span. Particuarly now, with a new visitor center planned at the former Wheeling Inn, it would be good for officials to know what the future will be.
One thing's for certain: when the bridge is lit at nigh it truly is a sight to see, and serves as a beacon for our community. State officials need to let the community know of its decision soon, so that we can plan for the future.
