Wayne Hill's 97th birthday turned out to be his most memorable.
The World War II veteran and current resident of the Carnes Senior Apartments says he doesn't recall ever having a birthday party. That changed Tuesday when friends, fellow veterans and others gathered to wish him the best as he entered year 98.
"It's so nice to see the veterans. We dwindle each day. We get fewer and fewer, but I'm happy to see them all out here with me today, celebrating my birthday," Hill said. "… Everybody in this room I appreciate and love, and I feel so happy to be here.
"In all my 97 years, I don't remember ever having a birthday party. This is a dandy."
Born in Wheeling, Hill worked after his military deployment to the Pacific for the Reichart Furniture Co. He is described by those at the senior apartments as "ornery." Happy birthday, Mr. Hill. Here's to another year.
