Wheeling’s New Gateway Is Important Key to Downtown

2 min read

Downtown Wheeling is in the midst of a major makeover. Yet one of the most important pieces of a reinvigorated downtown has yet to be addressed: the future of the former Wheeling Inn.

The site, purchased last year by the Wheeling Convention & Visitors Bureau, is set to be demolished and rebuilt as a new CVB. Tipping Point is overseeing the project while Desmone Architects is leading design, engineering and site development. It is anticipated the total project will cost up to $16 million.

As the project gets underway, Tipping Point is seeking the community's input on the site's new look. A survey has been created at wheelinggateway.tippingpointdev.com that all residents are being asked to complete. This will help Tipping Point ensure the new design respects the city's heritage and also the Wheeling Suspension Bridge while creating a space welcoming to visitors that showcases downtown.

"Our ultimate goal is to get about 10,000 responses to the survey, and correlate that data so we can come up with something that not only has a lot of buy-in, but equally as important, will be types of revenue generators that can be inside this whole gateway complex for sustainability," said Frank O'Brien, executive director of the Wheeling CVB.

Take the survey, folks. There are visuals at the website as well with some of the concepts already envisioned. Downtown's northern gateway already has been improved with The Doris Apartments and the new Bridge Tavern & Grill, so it's important that the CVB get this one right.
