Working the Polls an Important Role

2 min read

Today is Help America Vote Day, on which we are reminded of the vital poll workers who ensure our democratic republic continues to run as intended. This day isn't just about appreciation, however. It is about recruiting a new wave of those willing to work for the 2024 election.

According to the office of West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner, the observance is meant "to encourage people across the country to get involved in the electoral process by volunteering to be poll workers for their local elections."

Think about your own experiences at the polls. From those who check that we are registered voters at the correct polling station (and that we are who we say we are), to those who help voters use the voting machines correctly and even those who are handing out those fun stickers that let us brag "I voted" for the rest of the day, poll workers make election day work.

"Our county clerks can always use additional poll workers," Warner said. "We never really know how many alternate poll workers are needed for the election. So if we plan now to recruit and educate potential poll workers, they will be trained and ready if we need them on election day."

Want to be part of ensuring our elections continue to be run constitutionally and fairly? Are you willing and able to take on the responsibilities of a poll worker? Consider contacting your county clerk to find out how to get trained and be ready to jump in. It's a great way to learn more about how our elections work while doing your civic duty and getting paid for your efforts. Everyone -- from seniors to college students -- should give it a try.

Complete the application at GoVoteWV.com and get started. Your help is needed to ensure our elections run smoothly.
