For two consecutive years, the West Virginia Tax Division has made a mess of property tax valuations for those with natural gas and oil holdings. In 2023, the mistakes focused on individual property tax assessments. This year, the mistake came due to a "clerical error" that led a handful of counties -- including Tyler, Wetzel, Marshall and Brooke -- to receive about $30 million less in natural gas property tax collections.
On both fronts, there's been absolutely no accountability from Gov. Jim Justice. In fact, during a visit to Wheeling in 2023, the governor shrugged off questions about the matter. This year, he's not even addressed the "error."
It appears Justice either isn't paying attention or just doesn't care. That's something folks here would do well to remember in the months ahead.
