– To the organizers and participants of the first "Gateway to the West" robotics tournament, held last weekend at The Highlands Sports Complex. The event brought hundreds of teams from throughout the Northeast and Canada to Wheeling for a chance to earn a spot in the world championships. Here's to the event returning next year bigger and better.

– To Robert and Libby Strong of Wheeling, along with Jon Smith and his crew at Smith Family Workshops, for their continued renovation of the former Goodwin Drug location on Main Street to the new SMART Center Market location. Last week, workers affixed "Gideon" -- the large tyrannosaur head -- to the building's exterior.

"My knees are weak," Robert Strong said last Saturday as Gideon was lifted into place. "I've been waiting for this since April. … You can be down at United Bank and see this. When people go to Nailers games, if they're from out of town, that's going to grab them. And so they'll say, 'We need to go check that out.'"

He's right -- it's a stunning addition to town.
