Work Making It Painful

2 min read

One of Wheeling's gems is Centre Market. From small shops to favorite eateries, it truly is one of the treasures that makes the city unique.

Now, though, access to Centre Market is limited on two fronts, due to work on the Market Street bridge and, now, a sewer line separation project on 22nd Street -- one of the primary parking areas for those visiting the market.

This, coupled with the closure and pending demolition of the Center Wheeling parking garage, has made access and parking for those visiting Centre Market more difficult.

Cast & Baker Corp. of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, recently moved heavy equipment and materials into the block of 22nd Street between Main and Market streets, just west of the main entrance to the upper Market House. The work is temporarily eliminating a couple dozen parking spots. Cast & Baker is set to finish the project sometime in April.

"It was one of several sewer projects included in the 2021 bond issue," Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron said.

If the work needs done, now is the time. Barrels and closed roads are the norm throughout downtown and Center Wheeling. If traveling is going to be painful, at least get it all done at the same time so that when it's finished, folks can return to their normal routines. It's tough getting through Wheeling now, but once completed, these projects will make a difference.
