The rental market in our region has grown exponentially over the past 15 years as the natural gas and oil industry has blossomed. This has led to great opportunity for landlords -- and also potential issues for tenants with landlords who don't provide properties that meet basic standards.
Moundsville City Council last year approved a plan to address that matter through the creation of a Renal Registration Program. This program will ensure landlords meet the minimum safety requirements for their properties, protecting both landlords and tenants.
Informational meetings with the public to discuss the registration and inspection proacess are set for 9-11 a.m. today and also 4:30-6:30 p.m. April 25 at City Council Chambers, 800 Sixth St. in Moundsville.
"This program was created to ensure that tenants in Moundsville are given the opportunity to reside in clean, safe, and sanitary structures," city officials said. "The first step is to register the property with the Building Inspection Office. There is no charge to register the property.
"At some point, an inspection of the property will be scheduled. The inspection checklist centers on health and safety items."
Letters were mailed to rental property owners informing them of the new law. Tenants should expect landlords to meet basic health and safety standards; good for Moundsville leaders for moving this ahead.
