Thoughts on whether Paden City High School should be closed this school year over health concerns aside, the true victims here are the Paden City students, as uncertainty for them reigns with the school year's start only three weeks away.
If Wetzel County Superintendent Cassie Porter really was concerned about student safety at Paden City, why did she wait until the middle of June to announce the school would close? Why didn't that announcement come in January or February, as she had to know there would be legal challenges? The health concerns at the school were present then; waiting until June to shutter Paden City, only two months before the next school year, only made this process more difficult.
As it stands today, with a ruling on the school's future set to come early next week, what exactly is the status of Paden City's extra curriculars and sports teams? Can they practice? Does the football team have a schedule?
As has been the case every time this matter comes up, the self-interests of everyone but the students come first. Perhaps Porter, Paden City community members who want the school to remain open and others should remember that the kids must be the priority.
