Good Police Work Leads to Two Murder Arrests
Wheeling Police Department investigators deserve credit for their ongoing work into making arrests in two separate murder cases.
On Thursday, Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger announced Dwayne Herring, 53, of Wheeling has been charged with one count of murder in the death of a woman in March. Separately, Schwertfeger also noted Dennis Terrell Evans, 37, of Fairmont was charged with one count of murder in a 2023 malicious assault case that resulted in the death of the victim.
Herring actually was arrested late last month by the Albemarle County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and currently is being held in jail there, awaiting extradition. Of note is that Schwertfeger, prior to becoming Wheeling’s chief, served for nearly 21 years with the Albemarle County Police Department.
Evans, currently incarcerated at the St. Mary’s Correctional Center in Pleasants County on a separate charge, is now facing additional charges from a July 28, 2023 death on Wheeling Island.
Thankfully, Wheeling typically doesn’t see many murders. When they do happen, it’s good that our local law enforcement works to track down the alleged killer. Wheeling police investigators did a good job here in finding the evidence to make these arrests.
