Economic Development Position Is a Must for Wheeling

It is good to see that the City of Wheeling understands and acknowledges the importance of solidifying the city’s economic future, as members of council and city staff agreed that an economic development specialist is a necessary position within the city offices.

“Just based on everything that’s going on — 1400 block of Market Street, Market Street Parking Structure, WVU Cancer Center project and the property across the street from it, as well as general economic development and promotion of the city — I think having that position will be very beneficial,” Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron said.

Wheeling City Councilman Ben Seidler was even more succinct in this evaluation.

“I don’t think there’s a greater need in the city than this position,” he said.

There has been major forward progress in economic development in the region over the last few years. It is imperative that, not only must that momentum continue, but the city of Wheeling must have a voice at the table as projects continue coming to the Ohio Valley

Regional Economic Development Partnership has done good work in championing Wheeling’s needs, but the city should have its own advocate in those conversations. Making sure the Friendly City’s needs and desires are met could lead to a better economic landscape for the entire region.

The city should start a thorough search for a new economic development specialist as soon as possible and make sure the right person is hired. The future of Wheeling has plenty riding on it.

Starting at $2.99/week.
