President Trump, Area Deserves FEMA’s Help
It’s been four weeks since devastating flash flooding changed life for many here in the Valley Grove and Triadelphia communities of Ohio County. To ensure ongoing recovery, it is imperative that President Trump issue a major disaster declaration to facilitate federal assistance for the affected communities.
The flash flooding, which occurred in the evening hours after 4 inches of rain dropped within just 30 minutes, led to the tragic loss of nine lives. Entire neighborhoods in Valley Grove and Triadelphia were inundated, with homes destroyed, roads washed out, and critical infrastructure severely damaged. Our region’s first responders conducted numerous swift water rescues, and the community continues to grapple with the aftermath — including rebuilding homes and lives.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey promptly declared a state of emergency and has formally requested a federal disaster declaration to unlock essential resources for recovery. Despite these efforts, the federal government has yet to respond, leaving residents in a state of uncertainty.
The scale of this disaster necessitates federal intervention. Local and state resources are stretched thin, and without federal aid, the path to recovery will be prolonged and arduous. A major disaster declaration would provide access to FEMA assistance including individual and public assistance programs, which are crucial for rebuilding homes, restoring infrastructure, and supporting those families that have been displaced.
The declaration also would enable the deployment of additional resources and personnel to assist in recovery efforts, ensuring that the affected communities receive the support they need to rebuild and recover.
Local residents have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, but they cannot recover alone. It is the federal government’s responsibility to support its citizens during such crises. Issuing a major disaster declaration is not only a necessary step but also a moral imperative to aid those who are suffering.
President Trump must act swiftly, ensuring federal assistance reaches those in need. Delaying this decision only prolongs the suffering and hampers our neighbors’ ability to rebuild and move forward.
In times of disaster, unity and prompt action are paramount. The people of Ohio County deserve nothing less than the full support of their government.
