Extend Tax-Free Holiday in W.Va.
Shoppers around West Virginia have been able to take advantage of the state’s tax-free holiday that started Friday and is set to end at 11:59 p.m. Monday. It’s a great opportunity for parents and students to finish up –or start — their back-to -school shopping where they’ll lose a little bit less in their wallets.
Yet that begs a question: Why stop at just four days?
State officials who traveled across West Virginia last week touting the tax-free weekend would have even more to crow about if they added more days to the benefit. It gives those shoppers more flexibility to head out to the stores. The four-day window might fall at a bad time, and extending the holiday would make things much easier for them.
It also would give West Virginia a chance to match or get a leg up on its neighbors. While West Virginia has four tax-free days, Ohio has 14 and Maryland has seven. The flexibility in those states is already there, and there are plenty of West Virginians who live close enough to those borders that they can hop across and get their shopping done before West Virginia’s holiday even begins.
And with Gov. Patrick Morrisey touting his “Economic Backyard Brawl” with neighboring states, extending the holiday would be another carrot to get people to shop, and live, in West Virginia.
State officials should strongly consider stretching that holiday further. The benefits are plenty.
