Taking Time To Learn About West Virginia
New West Virginia University President Michael T. Benson is taking a page out of the historian’s handbook as he begins his tenure. His inaugural “Welcome Home Tour” through Wheeling and beyond demonstrates a thoughtful and immersive approach to leadership.
Spending this past Monday at Oglebay Park, where he met with students, alumni and community leaders, Benson, a history buff, made his first official stop at West Virginia Independence Hall, the state’s birthplace. He viewed the collections there and was given a tour by site director Debbie Jones.
Benson’s goal is to ground himself in the state’s history and culture, which he believes is essential to leading its flagship university.
What a unique way to learn about the state. By visiting historical sites — he departed Wheeling to visit Blennerhassett Hotel in Wood County, with additional stops planned at other historical sites — Benson is embracing local tradition and community dialogue.
Benson’s hands-on learning — a deep dive into the places and people that not only made West Virginia was it is, but are helping to forge its future — signals a presidency built on engagement, listening and genuine understanding. That’s a great first step toward helping WVU grow in the future.
