Continue Caring Spirit the Whole Year Round
A shining example of the charitable spirit of the Ohio Valley came Thursday, as it does every year, with the Sandy O’Haver Day of Caring through the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. As has been the tradition, businesses and organizations throughout the valley helped many of the region’s nonprofits throughout the day, taking on tasks that those nonprofits can’t get to.
The projects might sound menial — painting guardrails, washing windows and working on landscaping — but not for those nonprofits. They’re tasks that need done, but often must be placed to the side while the mission of helping neighbors in need is being completed.
The groups receiving the help say its essential. Those offering the help get their spiritual batteries recharged, too.
“It’s re-energizing, getting out of your own element and getting over here and being reminded of all the work that these organizations do,” said Kim Florence, president and general manager of the Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack. “It’s just remarkable. It gives you a new perspective. Our team looks forward to this every year, trying to help those in the community. It’s just really refreshing.”
So let’s not keep that caring to just one day. The valley’s nonprofits, good people doing important work, could always use a hand with those tasks. You may not be able to make a whole day out of it, but maybe a couple of hours or a weekend morning helping shred documents or sweep out a dirty shed.
The Day of Caring is a wonderful illustration of what we can do to help those who help others. Let’s extend that kindness throughout the year.
