The Correct View on Maps
Though the results of Ohio’s latest redistricting attempt have yet to be seen, state House Speaker Matt Huffman, R-Lima, should be commended for one thing: He says he will not give in to pressure from the White House to draw maps that meet the approval of President Donald Trump.
“I’m most interested in what residents of the state of Ohio have to say,” Huffman said when asked about Trump and national influence, according to the Ohio Capital Journal. “Of course, the President of the United States is an important person too, but there are 11 million+ people in the state of Ohio.”
Sure, he’s already firing shots about a Democrat-drawn version of the map, supporters of which he says are demanding “It has to be this or nothing else.” But that is to be expected when the state’s elected officials start work on such a project.
While those in Columbus do their angling, Huffman is right to understand this is THEIR work to do.
Now the task is for state stakeholders to develop fair and constitutional maps that will accurately reflect the will of all Ohio voters. Whether that comes to pass is yet to be seen. But in the meantime, it is oddly comforting to know that if a mess (or a perfect map) is to be made, it will be made right here in the Buckeye State.
