A Swing That Lifts an Entire Community

A new swing may seem a small addition to a town. But in Wellsburg, the installation of the “Almost Heaven” swing represents something much bigger — pride, partnership and opportunity.

Wellsburg’s new swing is part of a statewide initiative to place handcrafted wooden swings at scenic destinations. Each is designed to encourage visitors to stop, enjoy the view and share their experiences. Wellsburg’s location — framed by the Ohio River and the city’s historic downtown — provides a serene setting that tells the town’s story in a single snapshot.

This is the sixth swing to be located in our region. There are swings in Wheeling (Heritage Port and Oglebay Park), Moundsville (Grand Vue Park), Wetzel County and in Hancock County (Tomlinson Run State Park).

This project is also a testament to local leadership and collaboration. The Wellsburg Urban Renewal Authority pursued the opportunity, raised $3,000 in city and event funds, and worked hand-in-hand with the Brooke County Area Chamber of Commerce, the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Brooke County Commission. Their teamwork turned a simple idea into a tangible draw for visitors.

A single swing won’t transform the city’s economy, but it can be a catalyst for more foot traffic, more curiosity and more community pride.

Sometimes progress isn’t about massive construction or expensive projects. Sometimes it’s about giving people the perfect place to sit, smile and take in the view.

Starting at $2.99/week.
