Letting All Enjoy Movies

Easterseals Rehabilitation Center has long been a champion of inclusion in the Ohio Valley, and showed that again with its latest event.

The organization once again hosted its fourth a “sensory-friendly” matinee for children and their families at Towngate Theater.

“It’s a way for people who maybe wouldn’t feel comfortable in a theater setting or cinema setting like up at The Highlands, they can come here. There’s no expectation for kids to sit still and be quiet,” Easterseals marketing director Betsy Bethel-McFarland said.

Multiple accommodations are made so everyone can enjoy the film — “The Secret Life of Pets” was the latest showing. The house lights are brighter and the movie’s volume is lower. Closed captions are included and the movie was being shown simultaneously in the theater and the lobby, so viewers could watch where they were most comfortable.

It’s a nice way for families who have members needing such accommodations to enjoy a nice movie and a family outing. Easterseals also co-sponsors Inclusion on Ice with Augusta Levy Learning Center, so the organization tries to have everyone’s best interests at heart.

No one should be excluded from a day at the movies. Easterseals has made sure that’s the case. If there’s anyone in the community wishing to help in that endeavor, give them a call.

Starting at $2.99/week.
