Underrated Park Not Only Treasure
Those of you who have visited New River Gorge National Park and Preserve will have trouble believing anyone would fail to see it as a top destination for hikers, climbers, lovers of the outdoors and those who seek adventure amid unparalleled natural splendor.
But according to U.S. News and World Report, the park is the No. 1 most underrated travel destination for 2026.
“With its majestic forested hills and deep canyons, New River Gorge is often compared to the Smokies, but with shorter peaks, a more compact footprint and much smaller crowds,” according to U.S. News.
It’s also near some amazing small towns with wonderful restaurants and breweries and their own opportunities for outdoor excursions.
“There are a lot of worthy competitors, but isn’t it nice that West Virginia is out in front? It’s a very cool thing,” said Gov. Patrick Morrisey, in announcing the ranking.
Eric LaPrice, acting superintendent for the park, noted the No.1 ranking “says that when the people come here — whether it’s for the river, the climbing, the hiking, the camping or just the quiet — it really touches them in such a way. It means something to them, something that stays with them.”
Morrisey was right to point out the people who work in and around the park have a great deal to do with the recognition it receives.
New River Gorge is a stellar example, but West Virginia is filled with people and travel destinations that touch those who visit permanently. Of course, the magazine had to choose only one, but we must hope those drawn to visit by the report will consider other Mountain State destinations — and that West Virginians who have not yet made the trip will also make an effort to explore the treasures we’ve got in our own back yard.
