Help West Virginia Working Mothers

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, but WalletHub gave West Virginia working moms nothing that could be construed as a gift.

The website recently released its 2026 list of the best and worst states for working moms. West Virginia found itself near the bottom of that list. In a ranking of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Mountain State was a dismal 44th.

In seven categories, West Virginia finished in the bottom half of the country in six of them. The only category where it finished better than the 50th percentile was the quality of its day cares, where it ranked 21st (though plenty of families will tell you that finding an affordable day care center that has open spots for their kids is no easy task).

The other rankings were:

— Pediatricians per capita, 46th

— Gender pay gap, 26th

— Median women’s salary (adjusted for cost of living), 30th

— Parental-leave policy score, 27th

— Average length of a woman’s work week, 29th

— Percentage of single-mom families in poverty, 49th

We hear so much from state political leaders that we need to stop being last in everything. While West Virginia isn’t dead last here, it’s close enough to sound the alarms for those leaders to actually start fixing the problem.

How many of us remember the sacrifices our moms made during our childhoods, juggling work and caring for us to make sure we’re provided for financially and emotionally? We owe it to all working moms to give them the tools and opportunities to raise their families. That’s a present they all deserve.
