Last week was another impressive example of the growth that Moundsville has been experiencing over the past few years. Officials gathered at the site of the new Moundsville/Marshall County Indoor Recreation Center to celebrate its groundbreaking. Meanwhile, ground already was moving behind the audience.
Work already was being done to make that facility a reality, which made those at the groundbreaking feel really good about its future.
The new facility will house two basketball courts, each of which can convert into three pickleball courts, plus batting and pitching cages, a two-lane track and a community room.
One of the best aspects of the new center will be its location. On the grounds of the former Sanford Elementary School, it is centrally located in the city, which will allow Moundsville residents to walk and bike to the new facility.
Moundsville City Councilwoman Ginger DeWitt first brought this idea to the city after spending time at an athletic complex in Parkersburg with her grandchildren. She said her joy with this new facility was beyond words.
"I think it'll be a very big boost," she added. "I think it'll be utilized a lot. I think it'll be a big boost economically and I think it'll be a big boost for the kids who need something to do and a place for them to exercise."
It's also shows that Moundsville continues to evolve. Businesses like Sheetz, Aldi and Dunkin Donuts all have moved there in recent years. New hotels have been built. This new rec center will be able to house travel tournaments, which will boost the local economy even more.
It's great to see Moundsville and Marshall County continue to grow as an economic hub. The more of those we see throughout the Northern Panhandle, the better.
