Stay Safe In This Summer Heat

2 min read

It's summer. Obviously, it's hot. This week, it will be especially so.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the area from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with temperatures reaching an expected high of 94 degrees. That plus higher humidity will make it even more hazardous to stay outside too long. The rest of the week isn't much better, with highs not falling under 90 until the weekend.

With that in mind, everyone in the Ohio Valley needs to be careful what they do and how much they do outside during this heatwave. People may not realize just how quickly hot weather can adversely affect them until its too late and heat sickness takes hold.

The Centers for Disease Control has some tips on how to stay safe in this hot weather. If you're outside, stay in the shade as much as possible and, if you're working outside, take as many breaks as you can. If you're able, do your outdoor activities in the coolest parts of the day or in the evening.

When you're indoors, use air conditioning. Fans are a good move, but not if the indoor temperature is above 90 degrees. Then, the CDC said, a fan can actually increase your body temperature.

If you don't have air conditioning, you can dial 211, visit the National Center for Healthy Housing's webpage at nchh.org and search cooling centers by state, or contact your local health department or emergency management agency.

Be sure to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle and refill it throughout the day. Cut back on drinks that are high in sugar, caffeine and alcohol.

Pay attention to your body when you're in the heat. Symptoms of heat sickness include muscle cramping, unusually heavy sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, weakness and nausea.

Pay attention to others while you're at it. Check on your family, friends, and neighbors, especially if they have chronic medical problems or live alone. Check on pets.

Summer is a fun time, but that fun can disappear quickly if you don't be careful in the heat. Stay safe out there.
