There is plenty that has changed since the first day an Intelligencer came off the press in Wheeling — 174 years ago today — including the way you might be reading this.
There’s the tried and true print edition, a staple of this region since before West Virginia was even a state. You might also be reading this from your desktop or laptop computer. You could be viewing it from your tablet, or even from your mobile phone. In many ways, it’s a reflection on our community’s evolution. The major industries that have powered this region have grown. We’ve seen new ones enter and established ones transform as technology has advanced.
Yet, while much has changed, the mission of The Intelligencer has remained the same since that great day of Aug. 24, 1852. It is here, as it always has been, to tell the great stories and the important stories of the Ohio Valley and to inform you, our faithful readers, about what is going on in your neighborhood, your region and your state.
In fact, The Intelligencer was a leading voice in West Virginia’s statehood, and we have cherished our role as the provider of accurate, unbiased information in the Ohio Valley ever since. There is no better source for in-depth, here-are-the-facts reporting in the region. The thousands of people who have worked at The Intelligencer over 174 years have made that not just their work, but their calling, and that won’t stop any time soon.
You see that work every day both in our print and digital products. When major news happens, whether in the early day or dead of night, we’re there to inform and educate. And now we can get it to you as soon as possible through our digital platforms. How we deliver the news has expanded to venues that those who worked on that inaugural edition could never have imagined. How we seek that news, however, has remained the same. We search for truth, hold our government leaders accountable, offer accurate reporting with favor to no one and advocate for our community.
We’re far from done. Sure, how we provide the news may continue to change, but our principles never will. We’ll strive every day to be the most reliable source for information you can find.
So please join us in wishing ourselves a “Happy Birthday!” We’ll blow out the candles — and then we’ll get back to work.
