The Ohio Valley has been blessed with a wide array of organizations that help students throughout the region start the school year the right way, especially if those students need some help to do so.
These last few weeks have seen a number of back-to-school fairs supply students in need with the supplies they need to be ready to learn. As so many parents are seeing right now, back-to-school shopping can be a drain on the wallet. But many groups are doing their best to lend a hand.
The most recent came this past weekend when Bishop Darrell Cummings and the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple held its annual school supply giveaway, then presented a festival at Wheeling Park the next day, complete with music, food and inflatables for the kids.
"We want them to know that we are celebrating them," Cummings said. "That we are encouraging them, and that we believe in them. They are not just our future, but our present."
That wasn't the only such function. Marshall County Schools held a back-to-school fair in July that helped hundreds of students get the supplies they need for the start of school. And Youth Services System will hold its annual Celebrate Youth festival this Thursday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Wheeling Park, offering school supplies, other resources and wristbands for the kids to enjoy the park's amenities. And there have been many other such events in recent weeks.
A strong start to school is crucial. These groups made sure it will happen.
