The latest round of assessment test scores for West Virginia students were released on Wednesday, and as expected, there were no real gains from the previous school year. Across the state, only 48% of students tested proficient in reading, 39% in math, and 29% in science.
That's not even close to being good enough.
Locally, Ohio County saw 58% of its students proficient in reading, 48% in math and 35% in science. Marshall County had 46% proficiency in reading, 41% in math and 29% in science. Wetzel County, the reading proficiency was at 44%, math at 41% and science at 25%. The numbers were similar in the other counties in our region. Again, not even close to being good enough.
One of the things that will be most interesting to watch in the coming years is whether the Third Grade Success Act, which goes into practice this year focused on the Science of Reading curricululm, will mark a turnaround for the state's scores as it did in Mississippi, which went from 49th in the nation to the top 10.
That aside, there's still so much work to do to ensure our children have the best chance for success moving forward.
