The trade industries are a great option for the young people of the Ohio Valley, but the full scope of what those industries offer aren't always known to them. That's what makes events like the recent Project BEST Building Construction Trades Showcase so important to the Ohio Valley.
The showcase offered students from around the region a firsthand look at what jobs are available, and also offered the youth an opportunity to, in some cases, literally get their hands dirty by getting some hands-on experience at some of the stations.
At Wheeling Park that day, students could operate a backhoe, finish concrete, weld, tie rebar, try new electric tools and more.
These jobs pay good money, too. Apprentices can start out making between $40,000 and $50,000.
"It's kind of like the best-kept secret in the valley. People know about it, but when you really tell them about it, they're like, 'Wow, I didn't know this was here,'" Project BEST Executive Director Nathan Butts said.
With events like this showcase, these jobs won't be a secret for very long, and that's a good thing for the young folks of our community.
