Motorists who frequent Wheeling's roads, especially those in the Woodsdale area, recently got some great news. The Washington Avenue Bridge, which has been closed since last December, is on track to reopen in October.
That's music to the ears of many. For nearly a year, one of the most used throughways in the city has been blocked as a bridge that was working on borrowed time was replaced. It was the artery that got people to National Road from Interstate 70, and vice versa, without having to drive several extra miles one way or the other to get to that connection.
It's often said that you don't know what you have until you lose it, and that was the case with this bridge. We knew it was an important component to our community's roadways, but over the past 10 months, we all realized how important it is.
Not having that pathway between National Road and I-70 has forced us to drive out of the way to get to either side, clogging the other entrance points. And that bridge is a crucial route to get to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital quicker. We've been without it for nearly a year.
But those days will soon be behind us, and we'll have a brand new Washington Ave. Bridge built to last.
