The Ohio County Animal Shelter isn't in the doghouse. Right now, it is the doghouse.
Shelter staff recently had to seize 15 dogs from one location due to poor living conditions. They're being housed at the shelter in the quarantine area, along with the 24 dogs that already were there. The main shelter has a capacity for 26.
That's a lot of dogs and not a lot of room. Getting some of them adopted would help, but shelter manager Dave Campbell said dog adoptions have slowed significantly recently. Now, the shelter is looking for anyone to adopt or foster some of these pooches.
"We just do the best that we can," Campbell said. "We are looking to find foster homes – or do anything they can to maybe take the dogs temporarily."
Adopting or fostering dogs is a big ask, especially when it's a last-second request. But if you have any love for pups, it would help them to have at least a short-term home. It would be better than staying squeezed together with dozens of other dogs.
So if you have room in your home and a soft spot for canines, please consider giving the Ohio County Animal Shelter a call. You'll be helping them. You'll be helping an animal in need. And you just might find yourself with a new forever friend.
