Thanks for Race Help

Editor, News-Register:

Again, the citizens of Wheeling lived up to their reputation as the “Friendly City,” as they were out and about the streets to cheer and encourage runners and walkers from many states participating in the 10th Annual Lois Stobbs Memorial Veterans 10K Walk/Run on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019.

Wheeling should be proud of its own, as police, firemen, school personnel, the American Legion and city officials were much involved with this event, which included many local participants and 175 veterans of the 400-plus walkers and runners.

I would also like to thank the volunteer race committee members, who donate their time and expertise to making a quality race, many of whom are veterans themselves.

Last but not least, if not for the five major sponsors –Ohio County Commission, City of Wheeling, Community Bank, Valley Hospice and Alpine Ski and Boards — the quality of the race would not be possible.

It would be remiss not to thank all the young people who also volunteer and help with the race. Wheeling Park High School’s special needs students put together the race packets, 4-H and Girl Scouts manned the water stations, and to the faculty and staff at Bridge Street Middle School.

As always, Steve Novotney did a bang-up job as banquet MC, and Connie and Rosie Pitts provided excellent musical entertainment. Again, thanks.

After finishing our 10 years, the race has donated over $90,000 to the Paralyzed Veterans. We also, for the first year, donated $3,000 to the Paws for Purple Hearts organization.

Hugh Stobbs, race director
